A Stately History

A limonaia, from the Italian “limone” meaning citrus, was an annexe adjacent to aristocratic homes where citrus fruits were stored during the winter. The exotic citron was prized in Renaissance times, particularly by the Medicis who had a passion for collecting rare varieties. Quickly, they became a symbol of wealth among noble families in a trend that spread to the finest European courts.

An allegory for eternal life, following the cycle from flower to fruit to seed, the citrus fruit’s elevated status saw it depicted in many great paintings. The fruits were used more for ornamental and medicinal purposes than cooking, with the trees being planted in giant pots that could be moved into the orangerie to survive the harsh winters.
